Staying away from synthetics

Why synthetic Fragrances simply aren’t worth the risk. Synthetics contain EDC’s and chemicals that can wreak havoc on our hormones and our bodies. One of the best ways to protect your overall health is to choose consciously sourced products that are free of chemicals and fully disclose their ingredients. Liberated Ascent was created for this very reason. We all love to smell good, but most perfumes are made up of synthetics. Synthetic fragrances can be an extremely cheap way to give everything from perfume, cosmetics, shampoo, lotion, soaps, candles and cleaning products a desirable smell, but at what cost to your health?

Currently, FDA in the US doesn’t require any fragrance companies to disclose what they are putting in their products when they hide ingredients under the term “trade secret”. If fragrance companies are using ingredients that aren’t harmful to us, why won’t they tell us what’s in their products? Manufacturers are able to hide largely unregulated ingredients and hundreds of harmful chemicals under the term “trade secret” for fragrances. About 95% of chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum also known as crude oil. They may carry benzene derivatives (carcinogenic properties) and many other toxic chemicals which have been linked to cancer, birth defects, central nervous system disorders and possibly other harmful reactions.

Manufacturers will say that they don’t want to reveal their “trade secrets” for fear of being copied. But replicating fragrances could be incredibly difficult to do without access to their formulas, labs or the knowledge of an experienced perfumer. Even then, it would be incredibly hard to replicate. Still wondering how this could be possible? The answer is very simple, synthetics are cheaper to make. Fragrance companies may load them with chemicals with zero transparency.

Chemicals found in perfumes are known hormone disruptors associated with serious health issues.  According to the International Fragrance Association at least 3,000 ingredients can go into making product’s scent.  Perfumes can disrupt our hormones. Phthalates found in most perfumes, are known hormone disruptors and can affect us by either mimicking or blocking our bodies natural hormones.

Even if you don't wear them, synthetic perfumes can affect the health of those around you. Similar to cigarette smoke, when we wear synthetics, we increase the levels of chemicals of the people around us as well as our own. Our bodies produce small amounts of hormones every day. Even the slightest variations in hormone levels have been linked to major health issues. I encourage you to check out the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and watch the documentary Toxic Beauty to see just how many chemicals we can be exposed to every single day. Avoiding chemically loaded perfumes and products just means we have to pay attention to ingredients and read labels carefully. We’re here to help with just that.
